Patient Information

Here are some answers to common questions we receive from our patients. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about your ultrasound scan.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Most ultrasound scans require a referral form from your midwife, doctor, physio, chiropractor, or other medical practitioners. Please bring this form with you to your appointment or arrange for it to be sent to us prior to your appointment via fax, email, or post.

We accept the referral forms of all other ultrasound providers.

Do I need to confirm my appointment?

Yes, all appointments must be confirmed at least 4 hours prior. We will send a confirmation text message at least one business day before your appointment requesting you to confirm your appointment by replying to our message, or by calling or emailing us. If we do not receive confirmation we will attempt to contact you to confirm. If we are unable to do so, your appointment will be cancelled. Full details can be found in our Cancellation Policy.

Does my scan require any preparation?

The following scans require preparation:

Pregnancy Ultrasound

Pregnancy scans during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy require you to have a full bladder. Empty your bladder 1 hour before your appointment and then drink 1 litre of water rapidly (approximately 4 - 5 glasses). Do not empty your bladder again until after your scan. After 14 weeks, no preparation is necessary.

Pelvic Ultrasound

You will need a full bladder, please follow the same instructions as the pregnancy ultrasound above.

Abdominal Ultrasound

You must not eat or drink for 6 hours prior to your appointment. You may continue to take medications. If your medications need to be taken with food, please only eat dry crackers.

I'm on the hospital waiting list for an ultrasound, can I have the scan done at The Ultrasound Clinic instead?

Yes, you don't have to wait. If you don't have a copy of the referral sent to the hospital, you can simply request one from your GP and contact us to book a prompt appointment. We're significantly cheaper than all other ultrasound providers in the Waikato and completely transparent about our prices.

Do you have wheelchair access?

Yes, however there is a ramp and the main door can be a bit heavy. If you don't have anyone to assist you please let us know as we're happy to help. We can also arrange for access directly from the car park at the rear of the building. If possible, please let us know in advance if you might require assistance.

What payment options do you accept?

If there is a charge involved with your scan. We accept a number of different payment options.

  • Cash
  • EFTPOS
  • Credit Card (Visa and Mastercard)
  • Q Card
  • Farmers Finance Card
  • Cheque
  • Online Banking (Please let us know in advance if you want to make a direct payment via online banking)
  • Health Insurance (Please let us know in advance who your insurance provider is)

Can family and friends join me in the examination room?

We allow 1 support person and 1 child in the examination room. We have a family room available which allows other family members and friends to view the scan in a more comfortable environment. We have this limit in place as the examination room is quite small and our sonographers must be able to focus on the medical examination in order to provide a thorough scan.

Can I take my Ultrasound images with me?

Yes, your images can be made available on our specially developed My Scans app, which is available on Android mobiles and iPhone. There is a fee of $10 per scan for processing of your images. You can easily save, send, and share your images from within the app. If you don't have a supported phone, please talk to us about alternative options.
